Revelation 13:11-18

The sea represents the gentile nations; the earth represents the land of Israel. The first beast rises out of the sea (foreign nations), probably not Jewish by descent — the greatest world power ever, ruling 42 months, with a leader whose mortal wound is healed so the world marvels and hands over its authority (we saw a glimpse during COVID, people handing over freedoms for perceived safety). But this antichrist needs another to give him spiritual credibility — it is one thing to draw the worship of agnostics and atheists, another to draw in the devout of other faiths. So he needs his own prophet.¶

Then I saw another beast rising out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon. It exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence, and makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast...

The false prophet¶

This second beast rises out of the earth — many believe he will be Jewish by nationality (which makes sense if the first beast wishes to draw in the Jews). Later in Revelation he is called the false prophet. He has horns like a lamb but speaks like a dragon — he will seem humble, lowly, pious, gentle, but his words will be the words of the devil: religious-sounding but anti-God, anti-Bible, lies. He is the spokesperson and representative of the first beast, going around the world doing signs to deceive and convince the religious and skeptical alike to give their worship to the beast (much like Haman in Esther using the king's authority).¶

The image and the mark — a counterfeit Holy Spirit¶

And it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might even speak and might cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain. Also it causes all... to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name.

The false prophet causes everyone to make an image to the beast — similar to Nebuchadnezzar's golden statue all were required to worship (Daniel 3) — but this image is given breath to speak. The image is connected to the mark and the right to be part of this kingdom: if you do not worship, the image causes you to be removed from society. This sounds like something very close to us believers: God has put his seal on us, his Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 1:22; Ephesians 1:13-14). His Spirit is the sign that we are his and belong to his kingdom; without it we cannot enter (John 3:5). I believe the image and the mark are a counterfeit Holy Spirit.¶

No one knows for sure what the mark is, but we know two things: it will keep you from buying or selling, and it will be directly connected to the name and worship of the beast. Christians have worried about many candidates — vaccines, social security numbers, microchips, RFIDs — but the mark is not currently in use, and no one can accidentally take it. Just as no one can accidentally receive the Holy Spirit or be tricked into being saved, the mark is a choice: be slain or take the mark; starve or take the mark — and to take it is to agree to worship the beast. There will be no accidental taking of the mark for the believer.¶

As for the image given breath to speak — in the age of AI, there is already a gravitation toward using AI to mimic what God's word, the church, and the Holy Spirit are meant for: relationship, morality, conscience. There are AI "companion" apps downloaded tens of millions of times, AI therapy, even AI spiritual guidance; China's social credit system already scores behavior and gates loans, fuel, and rent. Combine AI, central bank digital currency, and a social credit system, and you have a human-made counterfeit of the Holy Spirit — a system designed to shape and conform each human into the image of its creator, the beast. I don't know exactly how the mark or image will work, but we live in an age where it is more possible than ever.¶

All of this makes me realize how great the Holy Spirit is. "Sealed" (sphragizō) means to secure, confirm, authenticate; "marked" (charagma) means an imprinted or carved, graven image. God makes us new creations by his Spirit; the antichrist turns people into graven images of himself. The Holy Spirit is our authentication that we are God's — he brings true freedom, feeds us through God's word, convicts us, and makes us more like Jesus. The mark promises all these things but gives the opposite.¶
